Encapsulation is the reason this one is tolerable for so many people. CeraVe's MVE technology releases retinol gradually rather than dumping it on your skin at once. L'Oréal, CeraVe's parent company, points to that lower peak surface concentration as the mechanism behind the reduced irritation compared with non-encapsulated formats. For skin that reacts to a sudden hit of active, spreading the dose out over hours is the whole trick.

Then there's the niacinamide. A Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology study found that co-applying 4% niacinamide with retinol reduced the increase in transepidermal water loss — a direct marker of barrier disruption — by about 29% versus retinol alone.
