Etekcity Luggage Scale, Digital Suitcase Weight Scale for Travel, 110 lb

Why it's worth it

This is the plain hook scale that does the job: clip it to a bag handle, lift, and read the weight up to 110 pounds. It's small enough to forget in a suitcase pocket, and it's among the most widely bought scales of its kind.

For most trips, this is all the scale you need. It weighs up to 110 pounds, which covers a stuffed international checked bag with room to spare. The body is about the size of a TV remote and weighs under five ounces, so it disappears into a packing cube. There's no app, no pairing and no menu to learn. You hook it on, lift, and look.

Picture the morning you fly. Your bag is on the bed, half-zipped, and you have twenty minutes. You loop the strap through the handle, lift the bag a few inches off the floor, and hold still for a couple of seconds. The number settles, you set the bag down, and you're done. That's the whole ritual, and it's why this one actually gets used instead of sitting in a drawer.

• +Picture the morning you fly
• +The accuracy is good enough for the job
• +It travels well in both directions, which matters more than people expect

What to know

• –The display is small, and the digits are sized for someone with good eyesight leaning over the bag
• –The 110-pound ceiling is generous for airline travel but not for everything else
