Why it's worth it

Teak is naturally oily, so this 24-by-18 board shrugs off water and stains with less fuss than maple. You get the same big footprint as our top pick at about 15 pounds instead of 25, and it's handsome enough to carry to the table with cheese on it.

Teak's appeal is simple: the wood is full of its own oil. The Wood Database puts teak around 1,000 lbf on the Janka scale and notes its naturally high oil content, which is what makes it so water-resistant. In practice that means a board that stays presentable with occasional oiling instead of a strict schedule, and one that doesn't drink up the puddle under a wet colander.

This is the big board that's actually pleasant to handle. At 1.5 inches thick and roughly 15 pounds, it's well under the weight of our top pick while giving you the same 24-by-18 surface, and there are grip handles cut into the ends. If you have to move your board to a sink or a shelf after dinner, this is the one you'll keep reaching for.

From our review of 7 wood cutting boards, by David Sinclair, Managing Editor

What we like

  • +Teak's appeal is simple: the wood is full of its own oil
  • +This is the big board that's actually pleasant to handle
  • +It's reversible, and the two faces are meant for different jobs: one clean side for a charcuterie spread, one for heavy prep

What to know

  • –A thousand lbf is softer than maple's 1,450, and you'll see the difference
  • –The listing itself is sloppy — one spec field shows a weight that's obviously wrong, while the bullets correctly say 15 pounds
