Why it's worth it

Camco's 5.3-gallon travel toilet does the same job as the Thetford for noticeably less, using a bellows pump that rinses the whole bowl in one push. The tank is a bit smaller and the plastic feels lighter, but on weekend trips you probably won't notice either.

The bellows pump is the reason to look here. You press a soft dome with your palm and water sweeps around the entire bowl instead of squirting into one spot. GearJunkie's field testing found bellows designs also hold a stronger water seal against odor between uses than piston pumps do. For a toilet living inside a hot tent all weekend, that's worth real money.

The detachable tank makes emptying almost civil. A sealing side valve on the 5.3-gallon holding tank locks in liquid and smell while you carry it, and a rotating pour spout aims the stream where you want it instead of where gravity wants it. You unclip the bottom half, walk it over, rinse, and clip it back on. No wrestling with the whole unit.
