Why it's worth it

The Montana 760i is a big-screen handheld with inReach satellite messaging, an 8-megapixel geotagging camera, and TopoActive plus City Navigator maps. It's rated to MIL-STD 810 and IPX7, and it's as happy on a dashboard mount as it is in your hand.

The screen is the whole point. Five inches of glove-friendly touchscreen makes planning on the device tolerable instead of maddening. You can take in a whole drainage at once, pan without hunting a cursor across the map, and read it from a mount at arm's length. If you drive to the edge of the road and then walk from there, this is the unit that works in both places.

The built-in camera is more useful than it sounds. Eight megapixels won't replace your phone, but every shot gets tagged with its location, so a photo of a junction, a gate, or a good camp becomes a waypoint you can navigate back to. Overlanders use it for exactly that: marking a faint turnoff you'd never find again from memory alone.
