Most feeders specify a compatible kibble size range in their documentation - a typical range is 6–16mm diameter. Kibble smaller than 5mm, common in kitten and toy breed formulas, can slip through gaps in drum mechanisms and over-dispense unpredictably. Kibble larger than 16mm, common in giant-breed adult formulas, is the primary cause of jams in feeders not designed for it. Always check the specification before purchasing, and measure a sample kibble piece from your current food bag with a ruler if you're unsure.
