Why it's worth it

AMSOIL builds Signature Series on PAO base stocks and rates it for 25,000 miles or one year, the longest interval in this group. It's a direct-order brand for most people, and it costs more per quart than anything else here.

Nothing else here is rated to go this far. AMSOIL's technical documentation reports that Signature Series held viscosity within OEM specification after 25,000 miles of controlled fleet running, with total base number still above 3.0 at drain. TBN is the oil's reserve alkalinity, its ability to neutralize the acids combustion creates. Above 3.0 at the end of a run that long means the additive package still had life left.

The base stock is a big part of why. AMSOIL uses Group IV PAO rather than the hydrocracked Group III stock behind most jugs labeled full synthetic. SAE and ASTM cold-crank data show PAO-based oils holding pumpability roughly 40% better at -30°C — that's -22°F — than Group III synthetics. If you park outside in Fargo, that's not a marketing number.
