Sam Harris makes the case that you can take consciousness and meditation seriously without accepting anything supernatural. It's more argument than instruction, and it's the standard recommendation for atheist and agnostic readers who still want a practice.
It takes skeptics seriously instead of trying to convert them. Most meditation books either assume you're on board with the spiritual framing or quietly work around it. Harris does neither. He argues the case directly, drawing on neuroscience and philosophy, and he treats your skepticism as reasonable rather than as an obstacle. If you've bounced off other books because of the vocabulary, this is the one that won't do that to you.
Harris writes from actual practice, not just theory. He spent years on retreat in Dzogchen and Vipassana traditions before writing about them, and that experience shows in the passages describing what sustained meditation is actually like. The book isn't a survey. It's someone reporting back from a lot of hours on the cushion and then trying to square that with a materialist worldview.
