Why it's worth it

A tough solar GPS watch with a metal-reinforced bezel, multi-band GPS, an altimeter and a battery that stretches for weeks. It tracks runs, vertical and speed on snow, then keeps going for hikes, sleep and everything else the rest of the year.

Almost nobody returns a Garmin. There's no sizing gamble beyond a 45mm case, it works for skiers and snowboarders equally, and it stays useful in July. Garmin holds more than 60% share among resort skiers using GPS ski wearables, according to a Skiing Magazine reader survey, so odds are good the people your recipient rides with already have one and can talk them through the app.

Battery life is the feature that matters on a cold chairlift. The solar lens tops the watch up during a full day outside, and owners upgrading from older Instinct models describe going weeks between charges rather than nights. Cold drains most smartwatches fast. This one uses a memory-in-pixel display that stays readable in direct sun and sips power, which is exactly backwards from a phone-style screen.
