The NOCO GENIUS10 is the stronger choice if you need to maintain multiple vehicles with different battery chemistries or voltages, want the added protection of an IP65 weatherproof rating, or value Force Mode for recovering deeply discharged batteries. For most single-vehicle owners with a mainstream car, either unit is excellent.

Do I need a special charger for an AGM or lithium car battery?

Yes, chemistry-specific charging is important. AGM batteries require a charger that limits bulk-phase voltage to approximately 14.7V and uses a proper absorption stage before dropping to a 13.6V float - applying the 15.5V equalization voltage some older chargers produce will permanently damage AGM plate separators. Lithium LiFePO4 batteries require a CC/CV (constant current, constant voltage) charge profile with a higher target voltage around 14.4–14.6V and absolutely no equalization or desulfation pulses, which can damage lithium cells. The NOCO GENIUS10 and NOCO GENIUS1 both auto-detect chemistry and apply the correct algorithm for AGM and LiFePO4. The CTEK MXS 5.0 handles AGM and EFB correctly but does not have a dedicated lithium mode. The Battery Tender Plus handles standard AGM but is not recommended for LiFePO4 batteries.
